David Yezzi, author of Black Sea, in conversation with Andrew Motion

David Yezzi’s books of poetry include Birds of the Air and, forthcoming in 2018, Black Sea, both from Carnegie Mellon. He is the editor of The Swallow Anthology of New American Poets, foreword by J. D. McClatchy. His libretto for David Conte’s opera Firebird Motel has been performed widely and was issued on CD in 2007. His verse plays One the Rocks, Dirty Dan & Other Travesties, and Schnauzer have been produced in New York and Baltimore. A former director of the Unterberg Poetry Center of the 92nd Street Y in New York, he is editor of The Hopkins Review.
Andrew Motion is the author of 12 books of poetry, most recently Coming in to Land (2017). He has also written biographies (of John Keats and Philip Larkin among others), and two novels (Silver and The New World) as well as a book of essays, Ways of Life.
Motion was the UK Poet Laureate from 1999-2009, and is the co-founder and co- director of the Poetry Archive and Poetry by Heart; he was knighted for his services to poetry in 2009. Before joining The Writing Seminars he was Professor of Creative Writing at Royal Holloway College, University of London.
